Cool’s advice for May

“The sweet buzz of May”

With spring at its height and summer on its way, all insects are now creating a buzz as they search for food from flower to flower.
After the last frosts this month, we can sow, plant directly outdoors and get our indoor seedlings out. Here are our top May gardening jobs

What to harvest now

🌾Now can be harvested: mint, strawberry, thyme, rosemary, sage, zaatar, basil, fennel as well as green onions, radish, spinach, peas, mallow, fava beans

💐 Flowers cuttings: sweet peas, ranunculus, lilac, snapdragon, cornflower, roses, iris, peony

What to sow or plant now

🌱 You can plant now: lupin, lettuce, fennel, zucchini, rucola (rocket), corn, broccoli, carrots as well as fava and beans in succession every other week. Last call for celery, cucumber, eggplant, okra, stevia, tomato, sunflower

🌱 You still have time to sow directly outdoor: rocket (rucola),all salads, aromatic herbs such as coriander, parsley, dill, and caraway, oregano, cuminum, melon, watermelon

🌱 Continue to successively plant (every other week) radish, onions, garlic and shallots (to extend growing periods)

🌱 There are bulbs for every season: plant now gladioli, calla lily, agapanthus to enjoy and harvest in summer

🌱 Sow now nasturtium, zinnia and all annuals annual flowers to attract and feed pollinators

To-do list

✔️ Remove faded leaves of spring bulbs. You can leave them or remove and store them to replant in autumn.

✔️ Remove weeds before they make and release seeds or compete with your plants for nutrients. Add them to your compost bin

✔️ Be economical when watering plants; control water collection systems; organize irrigation time

✔️ Watch out for aphids on young leaves, and remove by hand or spray with a soap-based solution before they cause any damage

✔️ Divide perennials if these are overcrowded

✔️ Protect emerging seedlings from slugs and snails naturally: consider natural predators (salamanders…); plants such as sage, lavender, thyme; well drain your soil and check for more iron in your natural fertilizer

✔️ Prepare soil (amend with compost)

✔️ Monitor the soil moisture around the trees and begin watering dry areas regularly but gradually, particularly for olive and fig trees

✔️ Be mindful with crop rotation: rotate crops and mix flowers/veggies companions. Check our advice if you did not plan it yet
